Using Emotional Intelligence to Cultivate Positive Self-Regard

Emotional intelligence is "a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain social relationships, cope with challenges, and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way." (Stein & Book, 2006)

We rely on emotional intelligence to process emotions we feel and detect in others, and to navigate challenges using our best actions rather than emotional reactions. Emotional intelligence is particularly important for cultivating well-being and a positive view of ourselves and the value we bring.

Self-regard is the way we view ourselves and feel about ourselves. Self-regard contributes to the level of confidence we take into the world. To protect and cultivate positivity in ourselves, it’s important to resist the habit of allowing negative emotions to influence self-regard. Instead, use your skills in emotional intelligence to self-manage and view yourself without judgement. This will allow you to see the value you bring with openness and confidence. If you have positive self-regard you will stay motivated to achieve your goals.

How Happiness and Success are Related

The passion, purpose, and meaning you have for your entrepreneurial endeavor helps you maintain a sense of well-being on your long and often bumpy path to business ownership. You have chosen to be on a journey of learning and development that supports your values. Your journey will excite you and challenge you. This will help you stay motivated and fuel your happiness.

Shawn Achor, New York Times bestselling author, popular TEDx speaker, and leading expert on the connection between happiness and success, states that happiness fuels success, not the other way around. In his book The Happiness Advantage he writes, “When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive.”

You can foster well-being and happiness by living your purpose, maintaining positive self-regard, fortifying your optimism, and building authentic, supportive connections. These happiness factors are cornerstones for success.

Using EQ for Resilience and Adaptability

While things may not always go your way as you build your business, you don’t need to encounter obstacles to practice resilience. Resilience is also the ability to move and roll with the punches, to “go with the flow,” to adjust to new situations, people, and environments - in a word adaptability.

How do you practice resilience and cultivate adaptability? How do you bounce back after a setback and keep going day-after-day toward your goals? The best approach is to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally. Fortify your capacity to adapt to the stresses you encounter by assuring you pay attention to your needs. For example, when you sleep well, eat nourishing food, and stay hydrated you are more resilient for your daily needs. Additionally, when you understand your emotions, you are able to respond most effectively. And when you are finding meaning in your current life chapter, you feel more engaged with your business, your customers, and your staff. So, it’s true that to be your best, most resilient self, you need to put your own oxygen mask on first before you help others. Not only will you benefit, but so will all of your relationships.

Summing Up

It’s important to recognize the role emotional intelligence plays in our sense of well-being and confidence. Using EQ, we can view ourselves and our value with openness rather than judgement. In doing so, we elevate our self-regard and level of confidence, which helps motivate us to achieve our goals. We can adopt the principle that happiness not only fuels success it also allows our brains to be more productive, engaged, creative, and more. Entrepreneurs have an opportunity to shape a positive culture for their businesses by using and demonstrating emotional intelligence. With emotional intelligence we can choose our behaviors that showcase our best selves rather than reacting based upon quick judgement or habit. It’s easy to see that EQ is a powerful tool for building and sustaining resiliency for entrepreneurs!
